Show #30: Depression & Suicide
This week on Radio 4 the Ages, we were joined by Jonathan Kromer (Social Worker & Psychotherapist with Senior Health Connection at Carolinas HealthCare System) for the duration of the show to talk about depression and suicide among senior adults. We learned that depression and thoughts of suicide are not part of the normal ageing process, and that there is help out there for people suffering from depression and thoughts of suicide.

Show #29: Elder Law & Being Prepared
Show #29: Elder Law & Being Prepared
This Sunday Jennefer Garrity (Co-founder of Garrift & Gossage, LLP) and Marilyn Morenz (of Hospice & Palliative Care Charlotte Region) joined the Radio 4 the Ages team to discuss advanced healthcare and financial planning. The key take-away from our discussion seemed to be that the earlier we start planning, the better off we and our loved ones will be. We talked about healthcare power of attorney, advanced directives, financial power of attorney, and several other forms that we can have in place to reduce the burden on our loved ones and clear up a lot of confusion that can arise in the event of a life-changing incident. To find out more, tune in!

Show #28: Parkinson’s Disease
Our broadcast this Sunday was entirely focused on Parkinson’s disease. We discussed not only what Parkinson’s disease is and the symptons associated with it, but also the new research being done by Dr. Mark Hirsch with Carolinas Medical Center showing the positive impact exercise can have upon the disease. We also talked about the goal of replicating a Dutch model of care that uses a collection of physicians in different disciplines to treat complex diseases and conditions. This model allows health care providers to care for patients in a more effective and efficient way. Also joining us in the studio was Myra Erickson, a CMC Live Well Health Center Nurse at the Harris YMCA, who spoke about the innovative partnership between Carolinas Healthcare System and the YMCA that allows patients to receive a refferal from a physician for an 8 week membership at local YMCA’s as well as individualized exercise programs for patients with Parkinson’s. Marie Jaffe, Executive Director with Parkinson Association of the Carolinas, also spoke with us about the role of the Parkinson Association of the Carolinas. Tune In, Call In, Get Involved!
