Show #83: Radio and Theatre History…A Nostalgic Perspective!
Ann Israel, an 85 year young resident of Atria Merrywood in Charlotte, NC was my guest co-host for this special show! Ann had a 30 year career in radio, doing everything from hosting her own show, ‘Breakfast for Two’, running the traffic board, and anything else that needed doing. Ann started acting in school plays in kindergarten, and her love for the theatre and actors was born. Ann interviewed many famous actors who were doing winter stock theatre in Palm Beach, including Helen Hayes, Billie Burke, Vincent Price, the Gish Sisters and many, many more. Ann also reminisced with me on monumental events that helped shape her life , including the attack on Pearl Harbor in 1941, the Twin Towers attacks on 9/11, her husband’s passing at the young age of 64, and other world events.
In 1971 Ann and her spouse Jim founded the Swamp Fox Players in Georgetown, South Carolina, which is still flourishing today. Heather Hammond, my sometimes co-host and community liaison for Radio 4 the Ages, joined Ann and I in the studio. Heather’s presence and her subtly sultry voice added to the richness of the show.
This is a truly enjoyable listening experience with Ann Israel, a most accomplished, fun loving, and entertaining soul.
